Syringe Fittings:The Luer lock is a fitting found on syringes. In normal medical applications it enables an air tight connection between the syringe and a needle. S17 Science has designed and collected fittings such as stopcocks, extenders and closers that use the Luer lock to control the flow of gases and liquids in syringes, to provide a stopper for syringes and to connect syringes to tubing.
In the diagram to the right, the female half of a Luer connector is on the right, which can fit onto both a Luer slip or Luer lock male connector. The male connectors are shown on the left. The top one is a male Luer slip, the tip of which inserts into the female half of the connector. The bottom one is a Luer lock, which is the same as the Luer slip but adds the threaded ring. The inner nipple still inserts inside the female half, but the rim around the base of the female half screws into the ring, thereby locking it in place. There are 2 types of male Luer lock connections one on the syringe that uses a threaded ring and another with a locking nut. The corresponding female connection has a rim that twists into the threaded ring or locking nut to make an air tight connection. |
